'08 Hurricane Season Above Average
Ft. Collins, Colorado — The latest forecast indicates that the 2008 hurricane season will consist of above average storm activities compared to previous years. Preliminary reports points to the possibility that the number of Atlantic-based hurricanes can be as high as 7; three of which are considered to be major hurricanes of category 4 and 5. However, Dr. Gray's team of forecasters based out of Colorado State University in Fort Collins reiterated that the predictions are very preliminary. These predictions are issued six months before the start of the 2008 hurricane season, which begins in June of 2008 and ends in November of 2008.
What Are the Hurricane Names for 2008?
Each year, there is a prepared list of names for tropical storms and hurricanes. These lists have been published by the National Hurricane Center since 1953. Initially, the lists consisted of only female names;
However, in 1979, the lists included male names alternately with female names. Hurricanes are named alphabetically from the list.. So, the first tropical storm or hurricane of the year has a name that begins with "A". The second begins with "B." The lists include names that start from A to W, but exclude names that begin with a "Q" or "U."
There are six lists of names that rotate as storms occur. The lists are modified only when there is a hurricane so devastating the name is retired and another name is chosen to replace it. Names alotted for 2008 Hurricanes
